My Top 10 Tips For Having The Best Yard Sale Ever

Yard sales are an incredible way to make some extra cash and get rid of clutter. I have hosted a lot of yard sales over the years, and I have also been the customer at yard sales many times. By being on both sides of the equation I have learned a lot of yard sale do’s and dont’s. Here are my tips for throwing the best yard sale ever!

1. Start really early in the morning
You will be surprised by how many people get up extremely early to go to yard sales. I usually start my sales around 7 am, and I am outside putting things out at 6 am. Even as early as 6 you may get a few people coming by to see your wares. Yard sale traffic usually tapers off around noon, so you want to be sure you maximize your time and get an early start. Plus the most serious yard sale shoppers are the ones that get up early.

2. Have cash on hand to make change
Be prepared to make change by having plenty of small bills as well as coins.

3. Put out signs the night before
Don’t be a procrastinator. Make sure you put out your signs the night before, so you aren’t rushing in the morning. Plus potential shoppers will be driving by that night. Give them the opportunity to see your signs so they can make plans to come to your sale the next morning.

4. Put effort into your signs
Your signs are one of the most important components of your sale’s success. They must get people’s attention and guide them where to go. Make sure that you put them in very visible, high traffic areas and that you put out enough to make it obvious how to get to your house. I have seen on Pinterest people doing creative signs featuring celebrity pictures or funny catch phrases. I love creative ideas like that. It really gets people’s attention. Just make sure that you keep your signs succinct and to the point. People won’t have a lot of time to take down an address or read a bunch of text as they are driving by.

5. Price your items
You can purchase some price stickers for very little money at stores like Target and Walmart. Price your goods the night before, so people don’t have to ask you how much everything is. Your goal is to make shopping as easy as possible for your guests.

6. Hang clothing items
If you can, hang your clothing items. That way people can easily look through them. This simple step will make your items much more visually appealing then a pile of wrinkled clothes that look like dirty laundry.

7. Put some of your best items out front
A lot of people will cruise by and try to get a feel for what you are selling before they decide if it is worth it to stop and look. You want to impress these browsers with your best items right out of the gate to turn them from window shoppers to customers. Furniture, toys, and modern electronics tend to be the most popular items.

8. Partner with friends, family, or neighbors
The more items you have to sell the better. If you have friends or family that want to get rid of clutter, see if they’d be willing to bring their items over. Even better, convince some of your neighbors to have sales as well. Community yard sales or neighborhoods with multiple sales draw larger amounts of customers.

9. Be willing to negotiate
Yard sales are for people looking for a serious bargain. Don’t be the type of yard sale host that wants people to pay you as much as you paid for the items. That is a major turn off to the yard sale shopper. Don’t get too greedy, or you won’t move through your inventory.

10. Have your yard sale on a Saturday
Sunday yard sales are rarely as successful as Saturday sales. Most people interested in yard sales are going shopping on Saturdays.

That is my top ten yard sale tips. Usually I take whatever I don’t sell straight to Goodwill. If there is a lot left over you may consider hosting a second follow up yard sale, but sometimes it is just best to get rid of the clutter.

How to Remove Pet Hair From Your Furniture and Floors

Pets are so much fun, but boy can they make a mess! It can be a lot of work cleaning up after them. As a pet owner you are constantly amazed by just how much hair they have. I own a cat with long white hair, and it gets absolutely everywhere. That is why I have to be very diligent about keeping the house clean and learning how to efficiently pick up pet hair. Fortunately there are tips and tricks that you can use to keep your furniture and your house clean. Aside from vacuuming and dusting, here are the top tips for how to remove pet hair from your furniture and floors.

Duct Tape
I have dark pillows in on my couch that tend to attract lint. Needless to say these pillows are magnets for cat hair. I tried the usual lint roller, but it just wasn’t strong enough to get the job done. To remedy this I took some duct tape and patted the sticky side of it on the pillow. This works like a dream on durable upholstery fabrics. I probably wouldn’t attempt this on something delicate like silk.

Dryer Sheets
I just found out about this trick, and it works better than I thought it would. Surprisingly it wasn’t very successful on fabric items like my couch or rugs, but it worked great on wood surfaces. I didn’t use any cleaning products. I simply used the fabric sheet like a rag to wipe away the hair, and I noticed the hairs clung to the dryer sheet much better than it does to my usual rags. I will be using this trick every time I clean off my wooden tables. Plus it makes the house smell good like fresh laundry.

You know balloons are good at creating static cling. Use that to your advantage by inflating a cheap party balloon and run it over your fabric surfaces such as a couch. The balloon will start to attract the hair like a magnet.

Rubber Gloves
This technique is similar to that of using balloons. Simply put on the rubber glove and run it over your hair covered furniture. If you want you can also slightly dampen the glove with water. The glove will attract the hair. When you are done, rinse your glove off in water.

If you have carpet flooring you are going to love this trick. It is especially good for reaching hair in the corners of your house. All you have to do is run the squeegee along the carpet and you will see it will pull up all sorts of hair that your vacuum missed.

What I love about these techniques is that they all involve things that you likely already have laying around the house, and they don’t cost a lot of money. If you don’t mind splurging on a few new products, you may want to try a rubber broom. Those are also excellent for attracting pet hair. You should also consider investing in some good pet grooming brushes to help remove extra hair from your furry friend, so they aren’t shedding as much in the first place. I’ve heard lots of good things about this brush called the Furminator, but I haven’t had a chance to try one yet. If you have let us know in the comments if it is worth trying out.

Buffalo Burgers with Caramelized Onions – So Good.

Buffalo Burgers with Caramelized Onions

This time of year in Colorado we can get snow, or 65 degrees some times in the same day so having a burger recipe you can pivot quickly from outdoor cookie to indoors is a good thing to have in your back pocket. This is one of these recipes and just happens to feature one of my favorite meats: Ground Buffalo or more correctly Bison. A quick note on Bison: not many people realize that although it features a flavor profile very similar to beef, ground buffalo is a much healthier choice featuring fat an cholesterol counts lower than chicken!

One thing to be wary of with Buffalo is that because it is a leaner protein than beef you have to make sure not to dry out these buffalo burgers, that is what makes pan frying them an attractive option and a good bad weather fallback.

What You’ll Need:
1.) 1 LB ground buffalo (available at Trader Joes, Costco, Sams and many grocery stores).
2.) 1 medium sweet onion 90% cut into thin rings 10% minced).
3.) Kosher salt and fresh ground pepper.
4.) Worcestershire sauce.
5.) Cheese of your choice.
6.) Buns (normal not oversized) and condiments.

This recipe will make 4 decent sized buffalo burgers so don’t overdo it on the buns unless you like your burger very bready.

TIP: Buffalo Burgers can be finicky when cooked on too hot surface, it may be counter intuitive coming from a BBQ where you might sear Beef, but start on a low to medium heat.

What You’ll Do:
1.) Combine the following items in a mixing bowl:
a. Ground Buffalo.
b. 1 Tablespoon each of Kosher Salt and ground pepper.
c. 2 Tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce.
d. The minced sweet onion.
2.) Set aside this mixture and start the onions.
3.) Take the reminder of the onion aka the 90% you cut into thin rings drop them into 13 inch frying pan with 3 tablespoons of olive oil. Cover and put on very low heat until soft.
4.) Now you are ready to start on the burgers, you should leave the onions from step 4 in the pan this will help prevent the burgers from drying out.
5.) Raise the heat from very low to between low and medium.
6.) Hand form 4 equal patties and drop them into the pan so that there is no onion between the cooking surface and the meat (next to it is fine).
7.) Cook time will vary based on how powerful your range is but these burgers will firm up just like Beef.
8.) With the first side down salt and pepper the uncooked face up side of the burger, flip after 5-8 minutes, Immediate add cheese of your choice and cook the burgers through.
9.) Remove from heat and plate the Buffalo Burgers topping them with the caramelized onions from the pan.

How To Make Your Own Healthy Chai Tea Latte

I love Starbuck’s Chai Tea Lattes so much. Unfortunately it is not the healthiest of drinks. A grande sized Chai Tea Latte at Starbucks has 42 grams of sugar which is just crazy. I have been making an effort to be healthier, so in that vain I have been avoiding drinks that are high in sugar. Which led me to seek out ways to make this drink myself in a much healthier way. I came across a YouTube channel called VasseurBeauty that had this awesome recipe that I am about to share with you. I gave it a shot, and I was very pleased with how it turned out. Here is how to make a healthy chai tea latte.

16 oz of water

1 cup of almond or soy milk

A dash of half and half

3 chai tea black tea bags

A cap full of vanilla extract

2 teaspoons of honey

A dash of cinnamon

Fill a small pot with water and bring it to a boil. Once the water is boiled, drape the 3 tea bags over the pot so that the bags are in the water steeping. Let it steep for 3 minutes.

While the tea is steeping pour the honey, cinnamon, and vanilla extract into your drink container of choice. I used a carafe, because I plan to drink the latte over the course of a couple days instead of all in one sitting. Once the tea is done steeping pour that inside the container as well. Let it cool down in the fridge.

Once it has finished cooling pour in your milk and half and half.

I served it over ice in a nice mug. I think it turned out really good. I used Coconut Almond milk in mine. I immediately noticed that it wasn’t very sweet, but I think that is because I am used to the sweetness of the version from Starbucks. Without all the sugar, you can taste more of the chai spices. However, I find that flavor to be really good so I don’t mind that at all. When I make it again I may add a tiny bit more honey and perhaps a little less milk. You can play around with the ingredients to get your perfect blend. All in all, I was happy with how this turned out, and I think it will make an awesome healthy alternative to the Starbucks version. Now I can enjoy the chai flavor I love without the guilt.

A Simple Sloppy Joe Recipe Using Ground Turkey

Sloppy joes are so easy to make and they don’t take much time either. My family came up with a very simple yet non-traditional sloppy joe recipe that uses ground turkey instead of ground beef. Trust me, the ground turkey will taste great. You will not be able to tell the difference. It is just as tasty as ground beef, but it is better for you. I also sometimes use the meat from this recipe in tacos, or I do a Hamburger Helper style meal with it and mix in egg noodles and green onions. This meat is really versatile!

1.25 pounds of ground turkey meat

1 can (8 oz) of tomato sauce

1 can (7 3/4 oz) of El Pato brand tomato sauce (Mexican Hot Style). This will be in the Mexican Food aisle of your grocery store. I’ve include a picture for your reference. This is my secret ingredient, as it adds a nice bit of spice and flavor to the meat.

Garlic powder to taste

1/4 cup chopped white onion

Cheddar Cheese (optional)

Hamburger buns

In a frying pan, brown the ground turkey meat until it is no longer pink. Drain the excess fat.

Add in the garlic powder and the chopped white onions and mix it in thoroughly. Then pour in the can of tomato sauce and El Pato.

Cover the pan and simmer the meat on medium-low heat until most of the excess sauce in the pan condenses. This usually takes about 20 minutes. I check on it frequently and stir it.

I usually serve the meat on a hamburger bun that has been toasted in the toaster, or I sometimes butter the bun and sprinkle a little garlic powder over it. Then I heat it in the oven until it browns a little. If you are avoiding bread you could serve this meat in lettuce like a lettuce wrap. I’ve tried that before and it is really good! Then I top it off with some shredded cheddar cheese. I usually serve it with a salad or some chips. That is my super simple sloppy joe recipe. It is a unique recipe, but it turns out great and is healthier than most. If you give it a try let us know what you think.
