We all try to avoid bad days as much as possible, but sometimes they just can’t be avoided. Maybe you got some bad news, got into a fight with a friend, or had a bad day at work. Even if you just woke up on the wrong side of the bed and are feeling like Debbie Downer, there are small things you can do to improve your mood. Here are our 10 ideas to cheer yourself up when you’re having a bad day.

1. Practice Gratitude
I know this is probably the last thing you want to hear when you are having a bad day. You are probably thinking that there is nothing to be grateful for on a bad day. However, even on a lousy day there is something to be grateful for. When you focus on the positive in your life you will gain a new perspective on your situation. Then you’ll see that although you’re having an unpleasant day, not everything in life is negative.

2. Do Something That You Enjoy
Sometimes the best remedy for a bad mood is to do something positive that you enjoy. Pick something that will help take your mind off things and refocus your energy like taking a bubble bath, watching your favorite movie, going to dinner with friends, etc.

3. Be in the Moment
Try to focus on the present moment by bringing your attention to your breath. Focus just on breathing in and breathing out. When you do this, you clear away the negative thinking in your mind and bring your focus solely to the moment. This is essentially practicing the art of meditation and mindfulness which have been scientifically proven to reduce stress. Those who make it a point to practice meditation and mindfulness report that they feel mentally sharp, more creative, and more capable to take on the stress of the day while being able to remain calm.

There are tons of uplifting quotes online that you can read when you need a pick me up. Try logging onto Pinterest and searching for positive affirmations. After reading some of those you can’t help but feel stronger and inspired.

7. Exercise
Working out is a great way to release negative energy from the day and have some time for yourself. Go for a run or walk to clear your mind. If you can, try to do your workout in the outdoors. Many people say being in nature makes them feel more relaxed.

8. Hang Out With Your Pet
Our pets are always happy to see us and are wonderful sources of unconditional love. Animals tend to have a relaxing and peaceful effect on us humans. Plus they are just fun to be around!

9. Talk to a Confidant
Many people find venting and talking through their feelings with somebody else makes them feel better about a situation. Get support and encouragement from somebody you trust that is good at lifting you up when you are feeling bad. Lastly, If you are still feeling a lot of emotion go ahead and allow yourself to feel it. Find sometime to be alone and go ahead and be upset for a little bit, cry, shout, and do what you gotta do. After, you’ll find the emotion will pass and you will start to feel better. Plus bottling up your emotions is not healthy.

Gym Motivation tips – Our top 5 favorites

What is your Gym motivation? How do you do it?

Going to the Gym is hard, staying motivated at the Gym is even harder. There I said it, I know many of us profess to love it and find it easy, but at least half the people on any given day find it difficult to get up go through the day and get to the gym. Finding ways to stay motivated and to continue to progress are key to keeping that gym motivation up and achieving the results you want. Here are some gym motivation tips that work for me:

1.) Get a fitness tracker and enable it on your phone. For me knowing what I did if I had a productive day or exactly how much exercise I got is motivating, playing little games with my self to get better numbers is fun and much easier to track with new technology.

2.) Join a good gym, one that is close to you, easy to park at, has a wide variety of classes and equipment. Boredom and difficulty of use are two of the biggest barriers you should remove before you start.

3.) Get a Gym buddy – accountability and friendship are 2 great ways to help stay motivated at the gym. Finding someone to go with you is probably the best way to do this.

4.) Gear! – If you are like me and like new toys/tech/gear reward yourself as you hit milestones at the gym.

5.) Set realistic time based milestones for yourself at the gym. “Lose 10lbs By X date” is a terrible goal and will frustrate you if you only get to 9lbs, instead try “Go to Gym 10 of next 14 days.”
